I'm not saying it doesn't happen but it's hard and the majority that I have seen that don't come with one of above stated perks typically seem to come from USBP. The first being the obvious that the NRLE world is a small and hard world to get into, especially with no veterans prefence, and no prior experience in one of the federal agencies that make up this world. Will those agencies accept the BIA academy? Is this a possible path to a perm NPS/BLM/USFS spot, or is there not really any cross-pollination?īottom line: given the situation I described, would you recommend leaving my "good enough" sheriff job for the risk of trying to make it as a federal NRLEO? If yes, what would your strategy be? I am at a point where I need to decide if I will continue to pursue this, or give it up and settle for my sheriff job. Regarding accomodations, Is it possible/feasible to pull your own camper with you as you go, to avoid living on dorm-style housing? Would parks accommodate this, or would I be stuck paying for private campgrounds? Im willing to pay my dues professionally and would actually enjoy living/working in different places, but I am way past the point where I want to share a room with a stinky college kid.Īnother option Ive considered is trying to get in as a BIA cop, and transferring to a permanent position with USFS, BLM, or NPS. As a non-veteran, would I be wasting my time? What is the current average timeline for landing a permanent position? Are seasonals actually getting hired under the LMWFA? Has this affected the timeline much, or can one still struggle for 5+ years to land a perm gig? Given the experience I described, would I face difficulty in getting hired as a seasonal? How much does my prior LE experience figure in ? Can I expect to get hired at GS-7 or should I expect to work a season at GS-5? Could I expect to work at a reasonably desirable park, or am I going to be a security guard at a museum? I would attend a seasonal academy and get my EMT, then apply for any open position. I am considering leaving my permanent, benefitted general LE job to take a stab at the federal world. For BLM/USFS, it appears the new reality is that if you're not a current perm employee or veteran, you won't even have the opportunity to apply, led alone land a position. It seems it is basically impossible to land a permanent position without working as an NPS seasonal. The mix of duties of an NPS ranger is appealing, but Id happily take a BLM or USFS job. My long term goal has always been a position as a federal land management LEO.

I actually graduated from an SLETP school, but it has been well over three years. I am fire qualified, have my EMR, and have a significant NRLE-related certs and training (boat enforcement, ATV, snowmobile schools, SAR, swiftwater), etc. I have five years law enforcement experience - two years as a limited-commission city park ranger in a major urban area, two years as a state park LE ranger on a large property (until they decommissioned us), and a year as a deputy sheriff (current job). I am looking for perspectives from these folks. I can see from looking back at previous threads that there are several NPS/USFS/BLM LEO's that monitor these boards.
